In this project, we aim to investigate local electronic behaviour of quantum materials. Particularly, we are interested in understanding the electronic correlations leading to observation of quantum phases such as topological insulators, Weyl semimetals, intrinsic magnetism, etc. Here, we would like to focus on Weyl Semimetals such as WTe2, or magnetic 2D transition metal phosphorous trichalcogenides such as NiPS3 and 2D transition metal halides such as CrI3, etc. The 2D structure of these magnetic materials holds great promise for low energy dissipation magnetic storage and spintronics.
Single crystals and MBE grown thin films for these studies will be provided by Dr. Peter Jacobson. These materials will be investigated by low-temperature Fourier Transform Scanning Tunnelling Microscope (STM) to look for charge density waves, topological order, and how these phenomena are affected by intrinsic and extrinsic defects.
Within the scope of this Ph.D. thesis, the student/s will learn the growth of high-quality films of using MBE at UQ. As a measurement tool, the student/s will extensively work with a state of the art very low temperature (T ~ 400 mK) ultra-high-vacuum STM equipped with a 3D vector magnetic field at IIT Delhi. Temperature and magnetic field dependent local tunnelling spectroscopy measurements will be performed to obtain information on the surface band structure of the respective materials. Studies of defects in these materials are critical to understand the defect tolerance of future devices and inadvertent changes to the electronic and magnetic structure.
