In a rapidly evolving global landscape, the collaboration between academic research and industry practice is proving to be a powerful catalyst for innovation, economic development, and societal progress.

In the first half of 2025, The University of Queensland–Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (UQ–IITD) Research Academy demonstrated the strength of this collaboration through a series of thematic roundtables, held as a lead-in to workshops scheduled for the second half of the year. These roundtables spanned 6 critical domains: Quantum Technologies, Healthcare and Biotechnology, Digital Futures and Artificial Intelligence, Clean Energy and Sustainability, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing, and Societal Transformations and Livelihoods.

Across all themes, the roundtables underscored the importance of bridging theoretical knowledge with practical application. Academic institutions bring deep expertise in research and innovation, while industry partners offer real-world challenges, implementation pathways, and market insights. This collaboration ensures that solutions are not only cutting-edge but also scalable, sustainable, and socially impactful.

Key outcomes and strategic insights

1. Workforce development and employability

Joint initiatives are cultivating a future-ready workforce through internships, co-op placements, and targeted training programs. Whether it’s quantum computing, biomedical engineering, or AI-driven platforms, students are gaining hands-on experience and industry-relevant skills. Programs such as part-time PhDs and bridge courses are helping professionals transition into specialised fields, enhancing employability and innovation capacity.

2. Innovation and commercialisation

Academic–industry partnerships are accelerating the development and deployment of technologies across sectors. From quantum sensors and regenerative medicine to smart meters and hydrogen storage, these collaborations are generating tangible products and services. Joint funding mechanisms, intellectual property frameworks, and startup engagement are supporting the commercialisation of research outcomes.

3. Policy, ethics, and governance

The roundtables highlighted academia’s role in shaping ethical frameworks and policy discourse. In AI and digital futures, researchers are advancing methodologies for bias detection, data governance, and model transparency. In clean energy, academic institutions are advocating for evidence-based policies and scalable pilot projects that align with national sustainability goals.

4. Sector-specific impact areas

  • Quantum Technologies: Focus on software development, sensing, and secure communications, with emphasis on interdisciplinary training and IP frameworks.
  • Healthcare and Biotechnology: Innovations in diagnostics, therapeutics, and medical devices, alongside regulatory support and infrastructure development.
  • Digital Futures and AI: Development of ethical AI models, secure data-sharing protocols, and interdisciplinary collaboration across STEM and HASS disciplines.
  • Clean Energy and Sustainability: Joint efforts in hydrogen technologies, smart grids, energy storage, and decarbonisation of industrial sectors.
  • Advanced Materials and Manufacturing: Integration of robotics, automation, and AI in manufacturing, with applications in defence, healthcare, and consumer goods.
  • Societal Transformations and Livelihoods: Research on caregiving, gender equity, and community resilience, supported by inclusive funding mechanisms and policy advocacy.

The UQ–IITD Research Academy is creating a robust transnational ecosystem for research, education, and innovation. By leveraging the strengths of Australian and Indian institutions, the Academy is fostering bilateral engagement, co-investment strategies, and milestone-driven collaboration. Initiatives such as the ABC Framework (Acknowledge, Bridge, Co-Create) are guiding systemic change and capacity building.

Academic–industry partnerships are not just beneficial – they are essential. As demonstrated through the UQ–IITD roundtables, these collaborations drive innovation, enhance workforce readiness, and address global challenges with agility and impact. By continuing to build bridges between research and practice, institutions can shape a more resilient, inclusive, and technologically advanced future. These conversations were discussed further at the industry panel session during UQ-IITD Research Academy Annual Symposium held at UQ in Brisbane, Australia on 1 and 2 July 2025 with key Australian and Indian industry representatives (pictured below).
